The McCormick Place, located only minutes away from downtown Chicago, is North America’s premier convention facility. The McCormick Place is owned and operated by the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority or MPEA. The $35 million facility, with an approved 33,445 square meter exhibition hall, was opened in 1960 and named after Colonel Robert McCormick, a charismatic visionary who headed the Chicago Tribune. In 1967 however, the exposition hall was destroyed due to a great fire. Despite being thought as fireproof, the steel and concrete construction succumbed to the fire due to the highly flammable materials contained in the building. In 1971, a alternate building was put up and is now known as the Lakeside Center. It opened with an exhibition hall that had 28,000 sq meters worth of space. Today, the McCormick Place is a venue of impressive size and versatility. It boasts of 248,000 square meters of exhibition halls and a floor area of over 110,000 sq meters on one level alone. It is composed of four state of the art buildings, the North, South, West Buildings and the Lakeside Center. The North Building has an expanse of more than 47,000 sq meters of available space and meeting rooms while the South Building holds with regards to 93,000 square meters of exhibit space. The new West Building holds in regards to 44,000 square meters of exhibit space, including a 23,000 square meter meeting space of 61 meeting rooms. The Lakeside Center provides over 54,000 square meters of exhibition space and is home to the Arie Crown Theater that may seat 4,249 people at a time and is presently the greatest seating capacity for an active theater in Chicago. The McCormick Place has a total of 173 meeting rooms worth when it comes to 55,000 square meters of room space, fit for littler conferences. It has 4 ballrooms, 2 of which are known as the greatest in all of Illinois. In addition to this, the McCormick Place has an assemblage seating that may accommodate 18,000 people. It has 3 other theaters that may seat 300 per theater. McCormick Place has two main parking lots on campus. Both parking a large total are run by Standard Parking and are within waling distance from the convention center. Lot C, the underground garage may accommodate 1,900 vehicles anytime. Lot A on the other hand, is a six level garage with 2,100 parking spaces available. |
